There are a great many pre-historical sites in the area. The remains of dolmens are associated with the pastoral culture in force in these mountains for 3000 years. The sites are located at high points, points which provided control over the surrounding area.
Megaliths

The megaliths to be found in the area covered by the Tourist Consortium of the Navarrese Pyrenees fall into four basic categories:

-Dolmens: roofed funeral chambers made of large slabs of rock.
-Tumuli: mounds of earth and stone.
-Cromlechs: circular sets of stones planted upright in the ground.
-Menhires: single, large stones also planted upright in the ground.

Stones are not just stones. Stones when joined, when positioned, like all human acts, have a meaning, they seek transcendence. They would appear to have funerary value and meaning, but, above all, they are gateways to magical realms, which lend expression to the divine. Stones, when regarded in this way, only demand respect.
